JANUARY 2013

Klezmer is Jewish dance music which was exported to America by east European immigrants from around the end of the 19th century. Most of it is instrumental and it’s strongly associated with Yiddish. I’ve arranged it so that the oldest tracks come first, but they’re not in strict chronological order.

OCTOBER 2012

Despite the high placings for Aster Aweke and Tilahun Gessesse in my African music list nearly 5 years ago, my knowledge of Ethiopian music remained fairly limited. The inspiration for this podcast came from the remarkable 27 CD Éthiopiques  series, which has opened my eyes to the wonderful and diverse music coming out of the region in the 60s and 70s. The podcast ends with a few more recent releases. A common feature of all Ethiopian music is the length of the songs : most are well over 5 minutes.

MARCH 2012

Sea shanties were work songs for sailors. The different forms of shanty were defined by the different types of work to which they related. They would be sung without instruments, just by call and response. By the end of the 19th century the traditional shanty was a dying art. Since then it’s been kept alive thanks largely to folk music collectors who sought out and recorded the songs and tunes of thousands of shanties. The last and greatest of these was Stan Hugill, whose 1961 compendium Shanties from the Seven Seas remains to this day the main authority on the subject.

The folk tradition is also rich in songs and ballads about seafaring – from the bawdy to the wistfully romantic; whaling songs, pirate songs, smugglers songs, songs about emigration and far away places, and songs about life on the ocean wave. There are many collections of songs of the sea, but unlike shanties it’s not a clearly defined genre.

In my selection I’ve tried to strike the right balance between honouring tradition and providing plenty and variety and interest to a modern audience. Most of the songs are many decades old and many are traditional. A few jigs and hornpipes are thrown in, which were dances popular among sailors.

JANUARY 2012

Folk and roots songs with tales of working people, manual labour and lives of hardship. The richest seam of this genre is Ewan Maccoll’s Radio Ballads, but further digging reveals a number of excellent compilations : The Iron Muse – A Panorama of Industrial Folk Music, and Along the Coaly Tyne – Old and New Northumbrian Songs (both on Topic Records), Classic Labor Songs from Smithsonian Folkways, and Harlan County USA: Songs of the Coal Miner’s Struggle. I’m aiming to do another podcast on these lines of sea songs and shanties.
